Design Space Exploration

Design Space Exploration (DSE) is an ongoing suite of open-source Grasshopper tools developed with Digital Structures at MIT. These tools aim to support visual, performance-based design space exploration and interactive multi-objective optimization (MOO) for conceptual design.

Future Tools

Other design tools (in the form of components and customized scripts) are under development!

Cable Explorer

This simple app was created along with the MIT Museum as part of an excercise that allows students to experiment with different cable shapes, 3D print them, and then physically test a cable-stayed cantilever to failure, building intuition about the relationships between geometry, fabrication, and structural performance. It uses the Shapediver interface, along with Rhino and Grasshopper.

Embodied Carbon Estimator

This dashboard (created by Jonathan Broyles) visualizes polynomial regression models that estimate the embodied carbon emissions (EC) for ten different concrete floor systems in early-design. Users can engage with the sliders to visualize how design decisions influence EC
